Frequently asked questions

Is Ledgerly free and where is my data?

Yes, it is free. Your household project is stored in this browser (IndexedDB) and in files you save. When a tool runs, only that tool’s inputs (for example your subscription list or a pasted letter) are sent to the usefulweb.site API and are not stored there; there is no account and no bank login.

Does Ledgerly connect to my bank?

No. Download a CSV export from your online banking and import it (File → Import bank statement). Ledgerly detects the columns, date order and number format, categorises the rows with your keywords and skips rows it already has.

What does the household check-up do?

It looks at what your project contains and runs the matching tools one after the other: exchange rates for foreign prices, Subscription Stack, Bill Detective per meter, the loan schedule (and plan B), How Long Will It Last per appliance, Hidden Fee Finder for pasted quotes, Deadline Decoder for letters, Life Admin Generator for life events and the Digital Estate Organizer. Results are cached in the project, so the dashboard and report also work offline afterwards.

How are contract notice dates calculated?

From the dates you enter: the contract runs for the minimum term from its start date and then renews by the renewal period (or ends when you set 0). Ledgerly finds the next term end you can still reach and subtracts the notice period to get the last day to cancel. It does not check the terms against consumer law in your country — read your contract and local rules.

Can I compare two options?

Yes. Every saved decision can be duplicated as variant B; Ledgerly runs both and shows their key figures side by side. Loans have a built-in plan B for extra repayments, and monthly snapshots compare your figures over time.

Does it work offline?

Editing, the cash-flow dashboard, budget vs. actual, the bank import, the recurring-payment finder, contract dates, the calendar, .ics export and the report all run locally. Tool runs need a connection; Ledgerly shows a clear message, keeps your work and lets you retry.

Can an AI agent build a Ledgerly project?

Yes. The project format is a documented JSON schema (/project.schema.json) and all 25 tools are available through this host’s JSON API and MCP endpoint. Open a finished project with an /app#project=… link or as a .ledgerly.json file.

Is this financial or legal advice?

No. Ledgerly organises your numbers and runs transparent calculators; each tool page explains its method and limits. Check important decisions — loans, contracts, legal deadlines — with your provider or an adviser.

How does reconciliation decide what matches?

Only by exact rules: a debit is suggested for a subscription when the price in your household currency is exactly the same and the subscription name appears in the bank description, and for a bill period when its total is exactly the same and the meter name appears. Possible duplicates share date, amount, account and description; possible transfers are opposite amounts on the same day in two named accounts. Suggestions are hints, not proof — nothing is linked until you press Confirm match, and you can clear it again.

Limitations

What Ledgerly does not do (yet):

  • No bank connection (no PSD2/open banking): transactions come from CSV exports you import.
  • Tools run on the usefulweb.site API and need a connection; rate limits apply (about 15 exchange-rate calls per minute), and Ledgerly retries automatically after a pause.
  • One household per project and one home currency; foreign prices are converted at ECB reference rates, not your card’s rate.
  • Contract notice dates follow the terms you enter; local consumer-law rules (for example shorter notice after the minimum term) are not applied automatically.
  • The recurring-payment finder needs at least three similar payments (two for yearly ones) and can miss payments whose amount changes by more than 15%.
  • Tool results are shown in English until their translations are available; Ledgerly’s own interface is translated.
  • Google Drive saving needs a usefulweb.site account; without one, projects stay in this browser and in files you download.
  • Reconciliation suggests matches only for exact amounts with the subscription or meter name in the bank description, and flags transfers only when rows carry account names; partial payments, fees or currency differences are not matched.
